Healthy Start is available to all pregnant women and mothers of newborns in Orange County, Florida. The OB Prenatal Risk-Screen is conducted at your doctor’s office during your first visit. Services are voluntary and provided where most convenient for the family. After being referred to the program, a professional will ask you a series of questions to determine how Healthy Start can best help you. That may include referrals to community resources, giving you educational materials or enrollment in a program where someone will provide additional services through face-to-face contact.

The Healthy Start program provides moms, newborns and families with education, support, and resources through one-on-one services in the home, hospital, and community settings. Services are based on the family’s needs and proven methods to improve birth outcomes, child development, parent-child interaction, and maternal life-course.

How Do I Enroll?

By Florida Law, Healthcare providers are required to complete a prenatal screening to all pregnant mothers during their first initial obstetrician appointment. During this initial visit, ask for the Florida Prenatal Screen. This is a simple one-page questionnaire that is completed by you and your medical provider. The answers to these questions are kept confidential and are used only to provide the best possible care for you and your baby.

Pregnant women and new moms can also sign up by
calling 407-322-8645.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How is the screening information used?

All information is kept strictly confidential. For those parents who accept Healthy Start services, a nurse or care coordinator will contact you to assess your baby’s needs and offer you services. For parents not wanting services, your demographic information stays anonymous and your risk-screening information is used with other maternal-child health data to identify strategies for reducing poor birth outcomes in Florida.

Is this program income restricted?

No. Healthy Start is not income based. Any baby can have risk factors present that can lead to health and/or developmental problems.

How does Healthy Start connect with other home-visiting programs?

Healthy Start’s goal is to help women have the healthiest pregnancy and baby possible. This includes informing families of other programs available and getting them connected to those programs and services that best meet their wants and needs.
